Webhost upgrade

Thursday, June 30th, 2005

The webhost FINALLY got around to upgrading the webserver from a single P3-1GHZ to a dual Opteron 246. Bout damn time. Only a month and a half from when I initially complained (and I had been having problems before that) to when they finally upgrade the server. Hopefully things will run smoothly now, and I can actually use my site that I’ve been paying for.

When I upgraded to WordPress 1.5 a couple months ago, I broke my Permalink structure and didn’t realize it. That caused all the category links, comment links, archive links, etc to be broken! No wonder all the spamming stopped!

After fighting with it for a while, I realized that my structure was set to I kept getting 404 errors and couldn’t figure out why! Then I was looking through the latest visitors and saw someone linking to a picture at and it dawned on me. /archives existed! So I changed the structure to and it works again! Yay!

Now to track down a good anti-spam plugin since I’m sure the spamming will begin momentarily..

Cleaned it up

Monday, May 17th, 2004

I cleaned up my stylesheets and index file a little bit. To make things look like the old movabletype site I hadn’t really followed the WordPress CSS sheet and I had screwed around with the index.php quite a bit. Following some examples I was able to modify a WordPress CSS sheet to make things look the way I want (I actually started with this theme and did a fair amount of changing). Only slight modifications to the index.php file were necessary. Also managed to validate as XHTML 1.0, and the CSS validates with the exception of the elements that make the curved borders. Yay.

Previously, the site was on a couple of MovableType-specific webrings.. since I don’t run MT anymore I can’t be on them, but I can’t figure out how to get off of them. Hopefully their little robots will scan the site. If not, oh well. Sorry.

Of course, just like any other website, it’s a work in progress 🙂

No more MovableType

Monday, May 17th, 2004

Due to recent changes in MovableType’s licensing, I’ve switched software to WordPress. Moving was pretty easy, I just followed along with these instructions and did a little of digging around on the WordPress forums. I even got most of the “look” from the MovableType site transitioned over. Still a little tweaking to do, but for the most part, I’m happy.

SixApart can do all the explaining they want, but the simple matter is that the software is no longer free. I’ll use GPL’d software so that I know what I’m using is free.

Just for old time’s sake, here is what the site looked like under MT.

More spammers

Tuesday, April 20th, 2004

I guess running a “blog”, if you want to call my site that, is a constant battle against spammers. Checked today and had 12 new comment spams, all from the same IP address. I don’t see how Viagra relates to Linux CFLAGs, but whatever. The blacklist was updated with the appropriate blocking info for this spammer, but I doubt he’ll be back again anyways. Seems he was blocked once by it, but I guess he changed his message to get past the filter. Bastard. Oh well. Back to searching for a job.

What’s the weather like?

Sunday, August 24th, 2003

I setup a little plugin at the top left of the main page to show the weather in Muncie. It’s using AMK4’s weathernws plugin to grab the weather and print it out on the page.

I’m also using tima’s mt-rebuild plugin to rebuild the main index. Right now, I’m updating the page every three hours — no need to add more stress to NOAA’s servers really. Pretty neat plugin, maybe I can find some more things to use it for.
