2004 Indianapolis 500

Monday, May 31st, 2004

My cousin and I got to my Uncle’s camping area about 9am and hung around for a bit, hoping it wasn’t going to rain, but not wanting to sit in our seats for several hours during a rain delay. Then it started raining. My Uncle cooked us some breakfast in his little camper dealio on the back of his truck. Around noon we decided to head in to the track because we had heard that they’d be starting the race around 1.

Got there and our seats were amazing. Every other time I’ve been, probably 13 races, we’ve been just off of turn 4. This time we’re RIGHT by the start/finish line, the yard of bricks. We can see all the action in the pits, the cars coming off the fourth turn, all the way down the front straight, and in to the first turn. The seats were also under cover, so if it started raining, we’d stay dry.

Around lap 23 they brought out the caution flag, and then red flagged the race at lap 27 due to the rain. Bah. 2+ hr rain delay and things got going again. Couple wrecks and such, nothing too bad. Worst was a three car wreck that ended up with the cars sliding down pit road and a safety worker getting hurt. Lap 175 it starts to rain again with Buddy Rice in the lead. Race is called at lap 180, and he takes the yellow / checkered flag. Bah. It was around 6:30 at that time, and we really wanted to see the race go the distance. Oh well.

As we were leaving the track, it really started raining. Got to my Uncle’s camping spot and it started raining even harder! Instead of waiting for the rain to pass, my cousin and I decided to just go on to his Jeep. Got freakin soaked.. thunder, lightning, tornado sirens going off. Then it seemed like the storm just followed us all the way home, making for a miserable drive.

Still more cleaning on mom’s car

Friday, May 28th, 2004

Decided to apply the wax today. May the paint that much slicker, and seemed to make it look a little wetter. Definite difference. And it only took about 20 minutes or so.

Cleaned the leather too. That Mr. Clean Eraser kicks all kinds of ass. I could really tell where I had and had not cleaned as it got rid of all the dirt. Just did the eraser on the driver’s seat and the plastics around the driver — that one bar is pretty much shot. The driver’s floormat had never been really cleaned before, just some vacumming and a little shampoo. Decided to go after it w/ the hose.. YECH! So much stuff came out, and even more as I was brushing out some of the water.

I did have my camera with me. But I left the battery at my apartment in the charger. DOH!

Mostly done w/ mom’s car

Wednesday, May 26th, 2004

I finished the outside of mom’s car today. Pretty impressed with the results, which should speak for themselves.

I ended up using Meguiar’s #83 DACP, S100 Shine Enhancing Cleanser, and Poorboy’s EX-P, after the wash and clay. Wheels were washed, clayed, and waxed with Meguiar’s Gold Class liquid wax. Dressed with Turtle Wax Tire Wax.

Here’s a couple of my favorite pictures:

Still need to do the interior and do some wetsanding on the headlights. I may throw a coat of S100 wax on it if I get bored.

Washing Mom’s Car

Saturday, May 22nd, 2004

I owe mom a car detailing for mother’s day. She was never home much when she was in town, so now that she’s on vacation, I have all the time I need. Just got started with my little process today. I washed the car with Protect All Quick N Easy Wash and a microfiber wash mitt. Dried off using a 100% cotton terry cloth towel and waffle weave microfiber towel. Then I clayed the car using Clay Magic detailing clay. Here are a couple pictures I took, I’ll keep taking pictures as I go along, hopefully I’ll be able to see some difference. The car is tan, so stuff really doesn’t show up all that well. Total time to do those two steps was just over 2 hours.

Next on my list is Meguiar’s #83 DACP and #82 SFP, then S100 SEPC, Poorbooy’s EX-P, and S100 wax. I’m also going to clean the headlights by wetsanding and using Mother’s chrome polish, clean the wheels using S100 Wheel Cleaner, and dress the tires using Turtle Wax Emerald Series Tire Wax. Leather inside will be conditioned and cleaned with Lexol products, plastic will be dressed (not sure what I’ll use right now), carpet vacummed and shampooed if necessary. Lots of stuff to do!

The EX-P and some Meguiar’s Final Detail are actually in the mail right now.. Scheduled for delivery on Wednesday. So I’ll probably do the DACP, SFP, and SEPC on Monday, interior and wheels on Tuesday, then finish up on Wednesday. At least, that’s my plan for now. We’ll see how the weather holds up and such.

I’m a dope

Thursday, April 29th, 2004

Decided that my car needed some spring cleaning today, so I set out on the interior to clean out the winter crud. Spent about an hour cleaning stuff, a lot longer than I’d usually spend because I hate interior cleaning. Used some Turtle Wax Carpet Cleaner on the floormats and on spots on the carpet. Vacummed everything real good. Used some Fantastik citrus cleaner to clean up all the plastic parts, then dressed em.

Got done and was happy with the job I had done, so I decided to head home from mom’s house. But I couldn’t find my wallet. I knew I had taken it with me, so it had to be around her garage somewhere. Looked high and low, low and high. Couldn’t find it. Spent about 30 minutes. So I drove home, thinking I actually didn’t bring it with me. Nope, not at home. Back to mom’s. Went through the trash that I threw out, traced my steps around her house, looked through the car, moved seats forwards and back. Still missing. I just knew it had to be in the car someplace so I started feeling around between the driver’s seat and center console. Ah ha! There it is! Black leather wallet shoved down between the seat track, the center hump, and the console. All told, I spent about an hour trying to find the damn thing. What a waste.

I think I’ll do the outside on Friday and Saturday.. couple coats of Zaino and S100. Then maybe some new pictures. Mom recently got a Canon A60, so I’ll try that and see how it compares to my Canon S100. My camera was about $400 at the end of 2000, her camera was $160. Be interesting to see how they compare.

Damn Hoodlums

Saturday, January 10th, 2004

Walked out to my car tonight to go to Grandma’s house and discovered that some damn hoodlums had decided to egg the back of my car. Not too bad I suppose, just one or two eggs. But it was so damn cold today that they had about frozen to the car. Took the car over to mom’s house, poured warm water over the trunk, and used a credit card to scrape the eggs off. Oh, and it was 20 degrees outside.

Hah. And my apartment complex put a notice on my door this week about my lease coming up for renewal. Makes me really think twice about giving them more money when my car gets egged.

Got my new muffler

Saturday, September 13th, 2003

I had my cousin weld on my new DynoMax SuperTurbo muffler on Friday. The car is MUCH quieter, even compared to before the old Flowmaster had holes in it. If there’s any power difference, I can’t feel it. Cuz did a good weld job too…

All the muffler pics. While the car was on the lift, I looked around at the free paint job I got back in July/August.. I sure am glad I didn’t pay for the front bumper. The pics should speak for themselves..

bad paint

Couple more pics.

My car sure is loud…

Sunday, September 7th, 2003

My car had been kind loud the past few days, so I decided to take a look under the car and figure out why…

Maybe that’s why?!? The exhaust is only 4.5 years old, and 2.5 of those years were spent in Georgia, only 2 winters up here in Indiana.

I tried to go to Advance Auto Parts to buy a muffler repair kit. I looked over the two or three kits they had and decided upon the cheapest on. Go up front to pay, play is kinda busy. Gotta wait my turn… Guy in front of me pays for his stuff then asks the worker for something. Worker goes running around and helps the guy. Gets stopped by another patron on the way back up front, and helps that guy. Another worker heads up front and is stopped by yet another patron. Meanwhile, I’m standing next to the cash register with cash in hand. First worker is stopped by yet another patron. I’m pretty pissed off that they can’t get anyone to take my money so I just threw the kit on the counter and walked out. I’ll just deal w/ the loud muffler for a week or so, until I can get a new on welded on.

Got the car fixed

Tuesday, July 29th, 2003

So last Monday, I dropped my car off at the body shop to have the rear bumper repainted from my accident. Pick up a Ford Focus rental from Enterprise. All goes well.

Thursday rolls around, pick up the car.. Take a look at the back bumper and notice that the bumper looks the same. Look at the invoice — they did the front bumper. Go back inside, get the owner, he’s fuming mad. Seems the guy that did it wrote up his own estimate without looking at what was already in their computer. Front bumper repainted for free! Yay!

Owner tells me to come back on Monday, yesterday, so they and do the rear. They gave me a Ford Taurus to drive around. Picked up the car today, and it was all done! Owner did the work himself, and said he had to fix a crease in the bumper from the fender bender, oredered car parts on eBay for this occasion. Looks great.

Gotta wait 30 days until a wax it.. which will be right around my birthday. Great present to myself — shining up my freshly painted bumpers!

Got rear ended

Thursday, June 12th, 2003

Was driving home a few minutes ago, stopped at a light, and wack. Rear ended by a Chevy Celebrity. Nothing too bad, just looks like some scrapes on the bumper really. Neck is a little stiff, took some Tylenol.

Good Samaritan stopped and called 911 for us, since I didn’t have my cell phone on me. Police officer was there VERY quickly… 3 minutes at the most. I was looking in my car for the registration and he was there when I looked back.

Didn’t even get the other dude’s name. Cop had us pull into a parking lot, filled out the report, and said if I needed any of that info to get it from the police report at City Hall. Called USAA, they’ll have an adjuster call me and go from there.

Kid said, “I really didn’t hit ya too hard, did I?” I said, “Well, I guess I’ll find out in the morning.”

Oh well.

Went to the Indy 500

Sunday, May 25th, 2003

Saw Muhammad Ali up close.. about 15 feet away as he was getting out of a van to go inside. He looks pretty bad.

Saw some Lear Jets do a flyover, one went just about veritcal it looked like.

B2 did a fly-by down the front straight, then another across the north side of the track. Both times it went right over us.

Saw a car flip over and slide about 100 yards… Safety crew was there within seconds, flipped the car over with 6 guys, and the driver walked away. Four or five years ago and the driver would have been seriously injured, if not dead.

Saw a “replica” Ferrari 2002 F1 car in a Firestone display. It was right next to a IRL car. They look so similar on TV, but are so different up close.

The Chevy SSR was the “pace vehicle”. Pretty sharp lookin car. They said it should be in showrooms late summer.

Some service members rode around the track in the back of Silverados before the race and they got a standing ovation.

That NYPD officer who retired and started opera singing did the National Anthem and did a kick ass job. He was awesome. Wynona Judd sung some song, meh.

Didn’t take my camera this year because all my pictures last year were crappy… I regret that decision.

The Borgg-Warner trophy is now filled up. They can’t put any more faces on it (each winner has his face engraved on the trophy), so they’re going to have to change it so they can fit more faces.

Fixed the window

Thursday, May 15th, 2003

I got the new relay from the Ford dealer and put it in today. I must have put something back together wrong, because I had some other troubles with the window. The “slider” that attaches to the glass was bumping the motor on the regulator. I fought with it for a few minutes, and found that slightly loosening the bolts that hold the regulator motor to the door allowed the motor to move out of the way of the slider piece. Problem fixed. Yay!
