New Bike doing just OK

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

I have about 290 miles on my Trek FX 7.3 right now. I’m having some problems with the front brake pads occasionally rubbing the rim. And, now, strangely, the seat has started creaking. It may be loose, or it may be junk. I’d lean towards the later.

But, the good news is that I’m enjoying the heck out of it! 290 miles in under 2 months sounds like a tremendous amount to me. I did a 20 mile ride on Sunday. Was pretty beat afterwards, but I finished. 15 mile rides are almost no sweat now.

So, yea, as long as you are willing to have a money pit and put up with some brake problems, the Trek FX 7.3 is a good one. I mostly ride on bike trails when I can, hitting the roads when necessary. Too skeered to do too much on the roads. Too skeered to get clipless pedals and shoes right now too.

Like the new bike so far

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

I’ve only had the bike for three days now, but I think I’m going to like it. I rode for 8 miles on Saturday and 15 this morning. It was great to finish up the ride exhausted, rather than in pain like my recent attempts at running. I’ve spent like $900 so far getting going and forsee needing another $150 or so to make me safe and comfortable.

Purchased Trek 7.3 FX

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

I’ve gotten fed up with the shin splints when running, and fed up with the elliptical and stationary in the fitness center, so I decided to buy a bike!

The first store I went to wasn’t helpful AT ALL. The salesman basically told me to find what I like and let him know, then went back to starting off in to space.

Second store, Bicycle Garage Indy, was MUCH better. The two salesmen I talked to were friendly and knowledgeable and steered me towards a bike that will meet my needs. I ended up with a Trek 7.3 FX. There was a great difference in feel between it and the 7.2 FX that I had first set my eyes on. I could immediately feel the difference when shifting, pedaling, etc. I thought the cost difference was worth it.

I took it on a brief 5.8 mile spin tonight and had fun. I’ll try for 10 miles in the morning and see how I like it then!

Here was a quick snapshot from right before I took it in to my apartment for the first time:

Keepin on running

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Been keeping with my running and working out. I’ve completed week 1 of the Podrunner Intervals Gateway to 8K series. Each time I covered around 4 miles, including the warmup & cooldown times. Having the short rests to break up the long run helps my mental fitness too.

I think I’ll keep on with this 8k series, which will push me just shy of 5 milles. That distance has always seem insurmountable to me, so it’s nice to see it becoming a reality. Hopefully my knees and shins and the rest of my legs will let me go that far!

Today I ran two miles as a warm up to doing about 20 minutes of weight lifting. I was thinking about it, and got a kick out of saying that. In January, two miles running would have been the working, and I would have been lucky to have been able to complete it!

Podrunner Intervals Level 1 Complete

Monday, April 6th, 2009

I’ve managed to complete a workout doing Podrunner Intervals Level 1 Week 10, which was the graduation mix. I did it on the treadmill and covered 3.85 miles in the 35 minutes of running. That’s a WHOLE lot better than I was doing the second or third week of Januar when I started all this!

I’m still having some aches in my knees, and now it almost feels like shinsplints. I feel like I need to take some time off the running to let my body heal, but at the same time I want to keep it up. Very weird. The elliptical and stationary bike just don’t seem to cut it and I almost feel guilty if I skip the running.

With the weather warming up, I need to transition to running outside. I couldn’t complete my first attempt at Week 10 when I ran it outdoors. Probably need to go back to week 4 or 5 of Podrunner for doing the outside workouts.

Throughout all this, I haven’t lost any weight. Doesn’t make sense. If I keep at it, hopefully my body will get tired of the fat and start shedding it!

Podrunner Intervals Week 8

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Today was my third attempt at Podrunner Intervals Level 1 Week 8, and my second time to complete it. First time was outside and it went ok. Second time was outside and I had to walk a time or two because my legs were tired / sore from weight lifting. Today was on the treadmill and it made for my first time running 3 miles on the treadmill. My legs were tired afterward, but I barely got the three miles in. I’ll have to add another tenth or so to get the 5k in, but I’m already pleased with the progress I’ve made!

Some Elliptical work today

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Today I did my Podrunner Intervals Week 7 mix, but I did it on the elliptical instead of the treadmill. The elliptical has a display showing my strides per minute, which really helps me match up to the beats per minute of the Podrunner Intervals mix. Made it pretty easy to keep the speed I wanted. It was only about 32 minutes total, which is less than I would have liked to exercise, but the experiment was successful.

I’m still hesitant to start running again with my knee pain. They’ve been feeling about 80 – 90% better, but I want them to be feeling perfect before I set out again. The weather is turning nice, so hopefully that happens quickly!

Knees are bugging me

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

I haven’t run since last Wednesday, so five days now, and missing now two days that I had intended to run. Not because I haven’t wanted to, but because my knees have been hurting me, even just walking around during the day. They felt ok on Sunday, and I’d intended to run today, but there was some twinges today while walking around at work, so I decided to skip the run again.

Instead of running, I’ve been using the recumbent bike and elliptical machines. About 20 minutes on each during a workout. I’d like to get up to 250 minutes of exercise per week if I can.

Podrunner: Intervals Week 7 Day 1

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Today I did the first run of Podrunner: Intervals Week 7. It involved a 25 minute run. I set the treadmill at a 10:20 pace and managed to keep myself running at that same speed the entire time. I think I covered around 2.41 miles running, plus the warm up and cool down time walking, for a total of right at 3.0 miles.

I used an ice pack on my knees when I got home because of some pain and bruising. They feel fine now, a couple hours later. I think I’ll stick to the three days a week that is recommended, instead of trying to push myself with more running. Do a little weight lifting and elliptical (I tried that yesterday for 15 minutes — challenging!) and stationary bike on the other days.

Podrunner Interval week 6 mix 2

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

I just finished running week 6 mix 2 of Podrunner: Intervals. It has two 10 minute runs with a 3 minute walk in between. I’m supposed to match my running to the beats of the music, but I’m never able to get it just right on the treadmill, so I just go at a comfortable pace. Today, that was faster than I did the 20 minute run the other day. I didn’t feel quite as exhausted at the end, maybe the break in the middle helped? Maybe I’m getting in better shape? Sure wish the weight would go away too!

Podrunner: Intervals

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

For the past several weeks I’ve been running & walking to the podcasts at Podrunner, more specifically, the First day to 5k series. It’s provided me with a semi-disciplined way of exercising. Today I finished up week 5 of the series which had me running 20 minutes straight — I haven’t done that in probably 10 years! I was pretty tired at the end but I managed to complete the run. Now I need to ice my knees.
